The Body Is Always Listening
Apr 01, 2019But sometimes we're not
In the work that I do specifically around women’s health I often listen to women speak about what their bodies are not doing. I feel their anger, their disappointment and disbelief that their body is choosing to work against them.
I’ve been there myself when I feel like my body isn’t doing what I would like it to, it’s not the right shape, it’s not the right size, it’s not strong enough, it’s not healing quick enough and so on. However what I’ve come to realise is often we can become so disconnected from our bodies, the conversations with ourselves are so toxic that the body has no idea what we want it to do.
Sometimes what we need to do is start a new relationship with our body, to recognise that it is working really hard, even though we never give it thanks, even though sometimes we push it to it’s limits physically and mentally, even though we don’t allow it to rest, even though we don’t always keep it nourished and hydrated!
Our body is trying it’s best, using everything available to keep us healthy, to get us through every day and it shows up everyday without any expectations...it’s simply trying to get our attention...we just haven’t been listening. The body know what to do to heal and to keep us in the optimum health, its often that our thoughts, beliefs and negative emotions get in the way. So sometimes when we ignore the gentle nudges from our body it only option to get our attention is to scream at us, through pain, ill health or burnout.
Its time for us to listen...
My invitation to you is simply to listen, to listen to what your body is asking for...to slow down, to become still and just listen. One of the ways we can begin to listen is through meditation and mindfulness. Learning to notice the mental chatter, the thinking, the planning, the to do lists, the worries, the stress. To notice the breath, the breath coming into the body and going out of the body. To notice how we feel, instead of simply allowing the FINE word to roll off the tongue! To notice the physical sensations in the body, the tension the discomfort and the wish to surrender. To choose to befriend this one precious body that you have, that’s seen you though the best and the worst of what life has thrown at you so far. To remember that your body is strong, your body is capable, your body is beautiful and your body is amazing!
